Every RAF reserve is trained to the same standard as those who serve as regulars. They develop skills in weapon handling, live firing, first aid, fieldcraft and physical fitness. Typically, RAF reserves spend around 27 days a year training for their role. They usually do this training in their spare time, during evenings and weekends.
In Yorkshire and the Humber, there are two Royal Auxiliary Air Force units – 609 (West Riding) Squadron and 607 (County of Durham) Squadron. They are both based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.
Serving in 609 Squadron
609 Squadron comprises RAF Regiment reservists and Force Protection specialists supporting RAF operations at home and overseas. It was initially formed in February 1936 in Yeadon and has a long and proud heritage.
